Our History

Shishmaref Alaska

 Shishmaref school children, approximately 1920's.
 Several of the Avessuk sisters at Shishmaref, Harriet, Glenna, Cassie, Dora, and Frieda.  They are holding wolverine pelts.   Their parents were John and Mary Avessuk.
 Tommy and Glenna Seetomona with their eldest children, Elmer, Raymond, and Stephan.  They were camping outside of Shishmaref.

Glenna and daughter Eda Seetomona at Nome camp.  They both are wearing parkas sewn by Glenna.  Inupiaq women sewed all the clothing for their family long ago.
 Tommy Seetomona and his sister Loretta Sinnok at Shishmaref. 
 Jimmy and Mary Seetomona, parents of Tommy Seetomona and his siblings Loretta, Jane, Willa, and Roderick.  Jimmy and Mary were born in the late 1800's.  This photo was taken approximately in the 1940s or 50s in Shishmaref.  Mary has tatoos on her chin, as was common among Inupiaq women of her era.  Tatoos were a means of beautification.
